What Virginia requires
Virginia tightened its entry route on July 1, 2025. To register as a pharmacy technician you must now complete a training program that is accredited, recognised by PTCB or NHA, or run by a federal agency or branch of the military, and separately pass a national certification exam administered by PTCB or NHA. To work while you are still training you must first hold a Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration. Renewal is annual and requires 5 contact hours (0.5 CEU) of approved continuing education every calendar year under 18VAC110-21-180, with no carryover of extra hours. Up to 1 of the 5 hours can be earned by volunteering at a health department or free clinic, credited at 1 hour of CE per 3 hours volunteered. A registration lapsed more than 5 years cannot be reinstated: you must retrain and retest.
Effective July 1, 2025, both a qualifying training program and a passed national certification exam are required. This is stricter than the pre-2025 route.

Steps to become a pharmacy technician in Virginia
- Apply for a Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration if you intend to work while completing the training program. This has been required since January 3, 2021 under 18VAC110-21-135.
- Complete a qualifying training program. Since July 1, 2022 the Board no longer approves or registers programs itself, so the program must independently meet one of the accepted criteria.
- Pass the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA).
- Submit the application and fee through the Board's online licensing system.
- Keep the credential active. If you are PTCB certified, renew every two years through recertification.
