PTCB Recertification: How to Renew Your CPhT

Updated

Your CPhT credential must be renewed every 2 years with 20 hours of continuing education. Renew on time and it costs $55; let it lapse and reinstatement costs $95 plus extra CE. This guide covers the CE breakdown, fees, the step-by-step process, and how to avoid a costly lapse.

Quick answer

Complete 20 CE hours (15 technician-specific, 1 law, 1 patient safety, 3 flexible) from ACPE-accredited providers, then submit your application in the window that opens 60 days before you expire. On-time fee: $55. Miss the deadline and you must pay $95 to reinstate.

Important: PTCB Quiz Prep is not an ACPE-accredited CE provider. Our free practice quizzes are study aids and cannot be claimed for CE credit toward recertification. Use them to refresh your knowledge, and earn official CE from the ACPE-accredited providers listed below.

Continuing education requirements

You need 20 hours of CE over each 2-year recertification period. The hours must break down as follows, and every hour must come from an ACPE-accredited, pharmacy-technician-specific provider (identified by the "-T" in the program's Universal Activity Number):

CE categoryHours required
Technician-specific15
Pharmacy law1
Patient safety1
Flexible (any pharmacy CE)3

What counts as continuing education?

ACPE defines continuing pharmacy education as a structured educational activity designed or intended to support the continuing professional development of pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians to maintain and enhance their competence. CPE should promote problem-solving and critical thinking and be applicable to the safe practice of pharmacy.

In practice, that means live or online activities from an ACPE-accredited provider that carry a technician-specific Universal Activity Number. Reading articles, on-the-job training, and study quizzes (including ours) do not count unless the provider is ACPE-accredited and issues CE credit.

How to renew, step by step

  1. Determine your recertification application window. Opens 60 days prior to your certification expiration date
  2. Complete all CE requirements. 20 hrs total: 15 technician-specific + 1 law + 1 patient safety + 3 flexible
  3. Ensure CE is auto-tracked in CPE Monitor. Since 2019 revamp, no manual entry. Need free NABP e-Profile ID.
  4. Login to PTCB Account. https://myaccount.ptcb.org/
  5. Confirm CE requirements completed. Verify CPE Monitor shows all 20 hours
  6. Submit application for review. PTCB framing: 'Apply, Attest, Submit!'

Two tips that prevent problems: set up your free NABP e-Profile ID early so CPE Monitor can auto-track your CE, and put a calendar reminder 90 days before your expiration date, since the renewal window is only 60 days.

What happens if you miss the deadline

If you do not recertify by your expiration date, you lose certification. You then have 1 year from expiration date to apply for reinstatement, which costs $95 and requires 2 hours of pharmacy law CE instead of the usual 1. Renewing on time is both cheaper and simpler.

Where to find CE (and how our quizzes fit)

Earn official, creditable CE from ACPE-accredited providers: the PTCB CE Directory, your employer's in-house CE, and other accredited online and in-person providers. Our quizzes are not CE, but they are useful free refreshers between accredited courses: the patient safety quiz and the federal requirements quiz map to the two mandatory CE topics.

Other credentials and state CE

The 2-year cycle and 20-hour requirement above apply to the CPhT. If you hold other PTCB credentials, the timing differs: CPhT-Adv and CPTEd also renew every two years, but the CSPT (sterile compounding) renews annually and has its own $20mid-cycle fee. Confirm the rules for any additional credential you hold on PTCB's renewal pages.

Separately, your state Board of Pharmacy may require CE beyond PTCB's. PTCB's state CE crosswalk explains whether CE earned for PTCB renewal also satisfies your state, so check both before you assume you are covered. See your state requirements for the board that governs you.
