What New York requires

PTCB table was STALE. Verified via NYSED: title 'registered pharmacy technician' is protected and requires licensure. Requirements: good moral character, 18+, HS diploma, AND certification from nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (NY accepts ONLY PTCB and NHA ExCPT). $175 fee for licensure and first registration.

New York requires BOTH national certification and state licensure to use the protected title 'registered pharmacy technician.' Some aggregate tables (including PTCB's map) have shown New York as having no requirement; that is out of date. NYSED confirms both are required.

The profession is new: Article 137-A took effect April 25, 2021, and a registered technician may only work under a pharmacist in a registered pharmacy.

Working while you qualify in New York

New York has no trainee or non-certified registration route: you must earn national certification (PTCB or NHA) and a high school diploma before licensure, and Article 137-A includes no grandfathering pathway. Unlicensed staff may still assist a pharmacist with non-licensure tasks under direct personal supervision, but that is not a formal trainee registration.

Renewing your New York license

Registration is triennial (valid three years), with the first renewal prorated to your birth month. New York requires no continuing education for registered technicians.

What pharmacy technicians can do in New York

Under Education Law section 6841, a registered pharmacy technician assists a pharmacist, only under direct personal supervision and only in a registered pharmacy, with compounding, preparing, labeling, or dispensing tasks that require no professional judgment (all work is pharmacist-approved before dispensing). They may receive written or electronic prescriptions, type labels, key and retrieve prescription data, count and package dosage units, and hand completed prescriptions to patients. A pharmacist may supervise no more than two registered technicians, and no more than four people total. Vaccine administration is not part of the registered technician scope.
