What Illinois requires

Two tiers: Registered Pharmacy Technician and Certified Pharmacy Technician. Min age 16 to be a Registered Pharmacy Technician. Certified designation requires proof of passing PTCB or ExCPT exam AND proof of education (approved pharmacy technician program certificate). Licensed by IDFPR; Continental Testing Services (CTS) handles exam processing.

Illinois has two tiers. The higher Certified Pharmacy Technician designation requires both the national exam and proof of education, not just registration.

You may begin assisting a pharmacist for up to 60 days after you apply, before the license is issued. Training programs for technicians licensed since January 1, 2024 must include at least 500 supervised hours.

Illinois two-tier system

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician: minimum age 16, register with IDFPR
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician: adds proof of passing the PTCB or ExCPT exam plus proof of education (an approved program certificate)

Because Illinois requires national certification, passing the PTCE is a mandatory step. Prepare with our free 90-question PTCE practice exam and the 2026 PTCB study guide. Not sure which exam to take? Compare PTCB vs ExCPT.

Steps to become a pharmacy technician in Illinois

  1. Register as a Pharmacy Technician with IDFPR (minimum age 16).
  2. For the Certified designation, pass the PTCB or ExCPT exam.
  3. Submit proof of education (an approved pharmacy technician program certificate).
  4. Keep the credential active. If you are PTCB certified, renew every two years through recertification.

Working while you qualify in Illinois

Illinois issues a Registered Pharmacy Technician license (age 16 and up, a high school student or graduate) as the entry tier, the sole authority to assist a pharmacist under supervision. Within two years of initial licensure (or by the next renewal if under 18), you must upgrade to Registered Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Renewing your Illinois license

Registration renews biennially, expiring March 31 of even-numbered years, for $70. Certified technicians owe 20 CE hours per cycle (none for the first renewal); registered, uncertified technicians owe no CE.

What pharmacy technicians can do in Illinois

An Illinois technician may be delegated any pharmacy task they are trained for, except patient counseling, drug regimen review, clinical conflict resolution, final prescription verification (a certified technician may verify another tech's fill via technology-assisted verification), and dispensing HIV PrEP or PEP drugs. Illinois sets no fixed pharmacist-to-technician ratio. Technicians may immunize: under direct pharmacist supervision, a technician who has completed the required training may administer vaccines to patients age 7 and older.
