Fingerprint cards required. 45-day processing. Renewal notices sent 90 days before expiration. Failure to renew within 90 days of expiration = license cancelled.

California licenses under Business and Professions Code section 4202. PTCB certification is one accepted pathway, but it is not the only one: an accredited program or military training also qualifies.

How to qualify in California (choose one pathway)

  • Complete an accredited pharmacy technician training program
  • Hold an active PTCB (CPhT) certification
  • Hold an active NHA ExCPT certification
  • Complete qualifying military pharmacy technician training

California does not mandate national certification, but most employers prefer it and it is the most portable credential you can hold. If you plan to get certified, prepare with our free 90-question PTCE practice exam.

Steps to become a pharmacy technician in California

  1. Complete one of the four qualifying pathways above.
  2. Submit fingerprint cards (out-of-state applicants request the cards separately).
  3. File the pharmacy technician application with the California State Board of Pharmacy and pay the $120 fee.
  4. Allow about 45 days for processing; your license is mailed 4 to 6 weeks after it is issued.
  5. Keep the credential active. If you are PTCB certified, renew every two years through recertification.

Working while you qualify in California

California does not offer a technician-trainee or in-training registration. Under Business and Professions Code section 4115, you must be licensed by the Board before you can work as a pharmacy technician, so there is no interim or apprentice pathway.

Renewing your California license

Licenses renew every two years for $150, and the Board sends a notice about 90 days before expiration. If you do not renew within 90 days of expiration, the license is cancelled and you must reapply from scratch, so renew early.

What pharmacy technicians can do in California

A California pharmacy technician performs packaging, manipulative, and other nondiscretionary tasks under a pharmacist's direct supervision, nothing that requires professional judgment. A single pharmacist may supervise up to three technicians, and a 3:1 ratio per additional pharmacist takes effect January 1, 2026. Certified technicians may also administer influenza and COVID-19 vaccines and epinephrine after completing at least 6 hours of hands-on training and holding current BLS certification.
