What Indiana requires
Licensed by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Three qualifying pathways: pass a Board-approved national exam (PTCB or ExCPT), complete an Indiana Board-approved training program, or qualify by reciprocity. A Tech-in-Training permit (valid 1 year, nonrenewable) allows supervised work while you complete a program.
National certification is NOT required: a Board-approved employer or school training program is an accepted alternative to the PTCB or ExCPT exam.
A Tech-in-Training permit lets you work in an approved program before completing it; it is valid 1 year and nonrenewable.
Three ways to qualify for an Indiana pharmacy technician license
- Examination: pass a Board-approved national exam (PTCB or ExCPT)
- Training and education: complete an Indiana Board-approved training program (request a Tech-in-Training permit first if not yet done)
- Reciprocity: qualify under IC 25-1-21-5 with license verification from another state
Indiana does not mandate national certification, but most employers prefer it and it is the most portable credential you can hold. If you plan to get certified, prepare with our free 90-question PTCE practice exam.
Steps to become a pharmacy technician in Indiana
- Submit the Pharmacy Technician application with the $25 fee and complete a criminal background check.
- Provide proof of a high school diploma or GED and of age (18 or older, or a managing-pharmacist letter if under 18).
- Satisfy one qualifying method: pass PTCB or ExCPT, complete a Board-approved training program (via a Tech-in-Training permit), or qualify by reciprocity.
- Keep the credential active. If you are PTCB certified, renew every two years through recertification.

Certified technicians may administer any immunization the pharmacist delegates, after completing a Board-approved training program.
