Pathways: employer-based training, ASHP/ACPE-accredited, military, state-board-approved HS program, or PharmD within 5 years.

Ohio runs a three-tier system: Trainee, Registered, and the higher Certified Pharmacy Technician that requires an approved exam.

Ohio qualifying pathways (Certified tier)

Steps to become a pharmacy technician in Ohio

  1. Register as a pharmacy technician through the Ohio eLicense Portal and pay the $65 fee.
  2. For the Certified tier, be 18 or older with a high school diploma and pass an approved exam.
  3. Complete one of the qualifying training pathways above.
  4. Keep the credential active. If you are PTCB certified, renew every two years through recertification.

Working while you qualify in Ohio

Ohio's entry tier is the Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration ($40), valid 18 months and non-renewable: complete your training and re-register as a Registered or Certified technician before it expires. Trainees may be 17 (or younger through a Board-approved high school program) and do dispensing tasks that do not require professional judgment under direct supervision.

Renewing your Ohio license

Registration renews every two years, with certified registrations expiring September 30 and registered ones March 31 of even years. Registered technicians owe 10 CE hours per cycle; certified technicians instead maintain their national certification and its CE.

What pharmacy technicians can do in Ohio

All three Ohio tiers work under a pharmacist's direct supervision. Trainees and registered technicians do dispensing tasks that do not require judgment (accepting written, faxed, or electronic new prescriptions, but not verbal orders, plus data entry, labeling, and counting). Certified technicians may also do remote entry, stock automated systems, and run CLIA-waived tests. Ohio has no general ratio. Technicians may immunize: a certified or registered technician who completes a 6-hour ACPE course and holds current CPR may administer any immunization to patients age 5 and older under direct supervision, and a pharmacist may supervise up to three immunizing staff in a pharmacy (six at an off-site clinic).
