What New Jersey requires
Register as a Pharmacy Technician with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs through the MyLicense portal. National certification is not required. As of February 2026, registered technicians may be pre-approved to administer vaccines after completing a 6-hour ACPE training program plus adult CPR certification.
New for 2026 (effective February 12, 2026): registered technicians may administer influenza and COVID-19 vaccines to patients 5 and older, but only after Board pre-approval via a 6-hour ACPE training program plus adult CPR certification. Basic registration alone does not authorize immunizing.
You may not act as a technician for more than 10 days without an application on file, and registration must be completed within 180 days of starting.

Working while you qualify in New Jersey
New Jersey registers 'pharmacy technician applicants,' who may perform technician duties during in-service training for up to 210 days and are excluded from the 1:2 ratio during that period. The optional vaccine authority is a separate Board pre-approval (a 6-hour training program plus CPR), not a distinct license tier.
Renewing your New Jersey license
Registration renews on a biennial cycle. No continuing education is required for the technician registration itself; stop working if it expires.
What pharmacy technicians can do in New Jersey
A New Jersey registered technician may retrieve records, do data entry, collect patient information, transcribe scanned orders, prepare labels, count, weigh, measure, pour, and compound, and accept unchanged refill authorizations, under the pharmacist's immediate personal supervision. The ratio is capped at one pharmacist to two technicians, exceedable only when every technician meets set certification and training conditions. Effective February 12, 2026, Board-approved technicians may also administer influenza and COVID-19 vaccines to patients 5 and older (other vaccines to 18 and older) under a physically present pharmacist. Technicians may not take new verbal prescriptions, interpret orders, do drug utilization review, or counsel.
